School raising funds for science park

NEW MARKET — Administrators at New Market Elementary have initiated project planning and fundraising for a new science park to replace the current playground structure.

The school announced the creation of a planning committee composed of parents, staff members and community stakeholders to begin research into equipment and technology for the park.

“Our vision is to create a playground space that combines traditional outdoor fun with experiential learning in the areas of STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math,” Principal Brittany Cooper said. “We want our children to feel, experience and understand science laws of the world we live in and our environment.”

Through the science park, New Market students will be introduced to audio and visual elements, electronic and mechanical components, water, light, recycling, gardening, renewable energy and more.

“The goal is to create a recreational space that continues the educational themes we strive to teach in all of our classrooms,” Southmont Superintendent Dr. Shawn Greiner said. “We hope that through the generosity of our community sponsors, and the fundraising efforts of the Science Park Planning Committee, our students will have a state-of-the-art environment to learn, play and grow.”

Donations for the science park are being accepted via PayPal at www.paypal.me/newmarketelementary.
