Area districts prep for extended closure

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb’s announcement Thursday to close all Indiana schools until May 1 sent administrators around the state scrambling to get word to parents and employees.

Crawfordsville Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Bowling said Montgomery County’s three school districts worked together Thursday afternoon, following the announcement, to inform parents as soon as possible.

“We plan to return to school on Monday, May 4,” Bowling said in his letter. “However, this is a fluid situation that may require additional closure through the end of the school year.

“All practices, events and use of school facilities remain canceled for the duration of the closure.”

Schools have largely turned to e-learning practices since they were initially ordered to close earlier this month through a similar order from the governor.

The week of spring break (March 23-27) will be observed as planned, allowing teachers and students to resume online-education efforts for the month of April.

But due to the announcement which sees children out of the classroom through April, all state-mandated testing has been canceled, Bowling said.

“We understand these are very difficult times,” he said. “I want our students and families to know that we will all work through this situation together. School activities will return to normal after we weather this storm.”

North Montgomery Superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran, who worked with Bowling and Southmont Superintendent Dr. Shawn Greiner on their respective releases, issued an all-but-identical announcement Thursday.

“More details regarding extended e-learning will be forthcoming,” she said in her letter to parents. “We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continue to navigate these uncharted circumstances.”

Food services, which have continued despite closures, will remain available until doors reopen at all Montgomery County districts.

Additionally, the Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, the Montgomery County Community Foundation and other contributors will be providing backpacks with food 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at North Montgomery High School, 5945 U.S. 231 North, Crawfordsville.

For more details on food services, including drive-throughs and deliveries, visit the school websites or Facebook pages where full lists of locations have been made available.
