SECTIONAL BASEBALL: Mustangs fall in sectional

DELPHI — Fountain Central’s baseball season came to an end in the semifinals of the 2A Sectional 38 tournament with a 14-2 loss to Delphi.

The Mustangs, whose season ends at 13-15, hung with the Oracles early, but couldn’t match the offense late.

Two runs in the first inning was all the Mustangs could put on the board. The Oracles got three in the first, then broke a 4-2 game open with seven runs in the fourth.

“We just ran out of steam,” FC coach Adam Acton said. “Delphi is a hard-hitting team and they showed it today.”

Those two runs came when Carson Eberly walked to start things off.

Luke Foxworthy was hit by a pitch, and both scored on a Michael Geller single to right.

That was about all the offense, however, as FC could manage only two more hits against Delphi pitcher Tyler Landis, who went the distance and ran his season pitching record to 6-0.

“Landis settled down, threw strikes and let his defense work,” Delphi coach Ryan Long said of his senior.

In the meantime, the Oracles gathered 15 hits against three FC pitchers, starting with Lukas Miller, who started and picked up his first loss of the season. A.J. Hall faced eight hitters, and Geller threw to the last five.

None of those three are seniors.

“We return all of our pitchers,” Acton said. “We are looking forward to having these come back to anchor us next season, and we have a lot of capable hitters returning.”

There are only three seniors who suited up for the last time Monday afternoon, as Eberly, CJ Yager and Colton Robinson have graduated.

“I can’t thank these seniors enough for their work and effort,” Acton said. “They came back after missing a year, and showed the young players how to practice and play the right way, how to think and act like baseball players. They were top-notch.”

With a lot of players coming back, and looking toward the future, Acton still had a moment to reflect.

“We only won a single game two years ago,” the coach noted. “This year we won 13, and we were in just about every other game. That is a testimony to the guys and how hard they worked and how much they improved.”

Delphi went on to defeat Seeger 7-3 in the championship game. They will play Rochester Saturday in the regionals at Central Catholic.
