SECTIONAL SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Chargers hope to make hitting contagious in sectional

Posted

North Montgomery has had no shortage of offense this season, but have struggled holding other teams in check.

Averaging 4.5 runs per game has only turned into a 1-25-1 record, as the Chargers are giving up 17 runs per contest.

Coach Rob Earley hopes their bats can get hot and the defense be good enough when the Chargers face the winner of Crawfordsville and Lebanon on Tuesday night in the Class 3A Sectional semifinals at Lebanon.

“It seems that when someone adds a spark at the plate, then it gets others on board,” Earley said. “Becoming more consistent at the plate is a team goal that we have to adopt.”

The top of the lineup has done most of the damage this season for North Montgomery.

Senior Makinze Rominger is hitting .528 with 19 RBI and 12 extra-base-hits. She’s also scored a team-high 28 runs. Cascie Keller is also hitting .438 and Mallory Morehouse .321.

“We have to start the game with positive at-bats and much better defensive plays to avoid falling behind early,” Earley said of the Chargers’ chances in the sectional.

North Montgomery is averaging almost five errors per game, as their pitchers have allowed 471 runs, but only 280 have been earned.

The Chargers picked up their first win since 2018 — beating Indiana Deaf 20-12 on May 15. The improvement over the course of the season though has been proven.

“Megan Raff, Skyley Cloncs, and Jaymie Freeman has impressed me the most with their skills, their personal improvement and their desire to learn the game,” Earley said.

Other teams in the sectional include Lebanon (11-17), Crawfordsville (2-25), Frankfort (11-9), and Tri-West (22-3).
