Seeger's defense stops Southmont with 41-26 win

WILLIAMSPORT — Southmont’s girls’ basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt as Seeger handed the Mounties a 41-26 loss Wednesday night as part of a make-up girls/boys doubleheader’s.

The Mounties entered the game with its longest winning streak in since it posts a nine-game win streak early in the 2004-05 season. However, the Patriots’ defense was too much for the Mounties to figure out.

“They are a very hard team to score against and we knew that,” Southmont coach Dustin Oakley said. “They are only allowing 29 points a game so we knew it would be a limited possession game. We tried a few new things on offense. We basically played their game and the girls did most everything we asked of them. We just had a bad third quarter and that did us in.”

After trailing 22-16 in at the half the Mounties (12-8), Seeger outscored the visitors 14-7 in the third period and saw its lead grow to 36-23.

Seeger won for the 18th time in 21 games, having only lost to Benton Central, Clinton Prairie and Lafayette Harrison who have a combined 58-7 record, and showed early on why they are one of the favorites to win the Sheridan Sectional.

The Patriots did not allow the Mounties a single field goal in the final quarter as Southmont went 0-of-11 from the floor. For the game the Mounties converted on just 9-of-35 from the field.

Southmont was led by Sidney Veatch who scored eight points. Addison Charles added six. Seeger was led by Kiley White who scored 15 points (on five 3-pointers) and Emily Schroeder added 13 points.

Southmont will close out the regular season at home Friday with a home game against Lebanon.

The Mounties have already secured their first winning season since 2017 and will play the winner of Riverton Parke and Parke Heritage in the sectional next Friday.
