On Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at Cary, North Carolina, surrounded by her three daughters, Sherry Lee Macy, 74, was reunited with her two true loves: Jesus and Steve.
Sherry Lee Shugert was born May 12, 1947, to Ruth and James Whorley Shugert, at Fort Wayne. She graduated from North Side High School in 1965 and Ball State University in 1969. On Aug. 12, 1967, she married Steve Macy. After a long battle with cancer, Steve passed away on June 9, 1990.
Sherry taught English at Martinsville High School before relocating to Crawfordsville where she would raise her family. A long time member of First UMC in Crawfordsville, she loved teaching Sunday School, was a part of the circle group and with her husband Steve, led youth groups and were part of numerous ministries.
She served as secretary at the Drug Free Coalition and then at the Wabash Center for Theology and Religion. From there she moved to spend time with her children from Raleigh to Kansas City, to Lake City Florida, back to Crawfordsville and lastly back to Raleigh this past year.
Sherry did not know a stranger with her boisterous laugh and infectious smile that brought joy to anyone who met her. Her love for Jesus was something she shared with everyone from close friends to strangers at a restaurant. She was a wife, teacher, mother, Grammy, and friend to all. She loved her church, baskets, knitting and collecting shells. Mostly though she loved her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruth and her husband, Steve Macy.
She is survived by brother Robert (Jean) Shugert. Living on the tremendous legacy she leaves are her daughters, Laurie (Chris) Fry, Kristin (Jason) Howard and Carrie (Josh) Jones and the lives that gave her the most joy, her grandchildren, Hailey, Jacob, Jackson, Macy, Josh, Ella, Audrey, Lily, Emma and Margo.
A memorial will be scheduled for a later date in order to care for the safety of all who loved her. She will be laid to rest next to her love in Spartanburg Cemetery.
