FRANKFORT — After a 10-day layoff the Southmont boys’ basketball was looking to get a road Sagamore Athletic Conference win but the Frankfort Hot Dogs would not have any part of that and handed the Mounties a 65-54 defeat at Case Arena Friday night.
The loss marked the marked the sixth-straight time the Mounties have lost at Case Arena which dates back to 2012.
The Mounties (5-13) showed signs of rust in the first quarter as they fell behind 20-8, primarily because it could not keep track of Frankfort senior Trey Frazier. Frazier lit the Mounties up for 15 first quarter points and hit all four of his 3-point attempts.
“We have to pay a lot more attention to the scouting report,” Southmont coach Jake Turner said. “We watched their JV team hit like 10 3’s and we knew Frazier was deadly from the outside as he has hit like 45 out of 100 attempts and we just let him go free.”
Luckily for the Mounties, Frazier committed his second foul in the final seconds of the first quarter and did not play in the second period. That allowed the Mounties to cut the halftime lead to 31-26.
Southmont came out on fire in the third quarter and cut the Frankfort (5-14) lead to 36-34 with 5:20 to play in the third quarter. However, the Mounties failed to score again until Carson Chadd hit a shot at the buzzer to end the third period. Meanwhile Frankfort had gone on an 11-0 run and led 47-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
“We just have a tendency to have dead periods like that,” Turner said. “We just didn’t execute enough tonight. We aren’t mentally tough. This is the end of February. We have to be able to do a better job and making good choice, following the game plan, and playing through tough times. We only have two weeks before the sectional. We have to get this fixed by then.”
The Mounties made another run in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 54-49 with 4:48 to play but the Hot Dogs pulled way hitting 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch.
For the game the Hot Dogs hit 11-of-25 (44 percent) from 3-point range and at one point in the fourth quarter they had hit 11 of 20 before missing its final five attempts.
“We knew they were deadly shooters,” Turner said. “We just lost them and when we did they made us pay.”
Southmont was led in scoring by Logan Oppy as he poured in 18 points. Austin Bowman added 12, while Avery Saunder toosed in nine and Chadd added eight.
Frankfort was led by Frazier’s 22 points, while Cameron Williams and Braden Compton each added 14.
Southmont will be back in action tonight for Senior Night against Fountain Central.
