Small biz relief, water extension planned with funds

Additional relief is on the way for local businesses and nonprofits trying to rebound from the pandemic.

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners authorized up to $200,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds Monday to be distributed as grants to small businesses, industries and nonprofits.

The county received its first installment of relief funds as part of a more than $7.4 million allocation. The rest of the money is expected to arrive next year.

The largest share of the total funding, or $5 million, will cover the extension of water service along Nucor Road and the site of the future Tempur Sealy plant on Comfort Drive (C.R. 200S), according to a plan approved by the commissioners.

An additional $2.2 million will recoup lost public sector revenues to be used for providing government services.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved the lease with the Montgomery County Building Corporation for the courthouse annex. Annual payments will begin in July 2022 for a maximum 20 years.

• Set the date of October’s first meeting to Oct. 12, one day later than usual due to the Columbus Day holiday. County offices will be closed for Columbus Day.
