Smith to play football at Franklin

Crawfordsville senior Corbin Smith will continue his football career at Franklin College this fall.

Smith recently committed to play for the Grizzlies following a first-team all-conference season last fall for the Athenians. He has been a two-year starter at center for Crawfordsville.

Smith realized the passion he had for football the summer before his junior season, and started the process of finding an opportunity to play at the collegiate level. And it took two years of hard work and determination, even through a lost summer of 2020 due to COVID-19.

“I called the coaches, and they allowed me to come in and work out with the skill guys,” Smith said. “I took it upon myself to get better, get more reps in, and establish a relationship with Cale McCarty, the QB. My senior year, I did the same thing, but brought in Kaden Underwood to allow us to work through things before the season started, which was a little more difficult with COVID. I also would go out to the high school by myself and push the sled.”

Smith’s work ethic and desire impressed his high school coach, and the Franklin coaches as well.

“Corbin has been one of the most dedicated players in our program the past couple of seasons,” Crawfordsville head coach Kurt Schlicher said. “He has been a leader in the classroom, weight room and on the field. Franklin is getting a great kid in Corbin Smith.”

Smith plans to major in education at Franklin.

“I like the coaches, the campus and the atmosphere,” he said. “It felt like home. I plan to study secondary education and social studies in hopes of returning to Crawfordsville to teach and coach football.”
