South joins North in dropping mask requirement

Posted

South Montgomery became the second local school district to not require masks for the upcoming school year.

In a letter to parents and staff Friday afternoon, superintendent Dr. Shawn Greiner announced that, based on current state health guidance, face coverings won’t have to be worn in school buildings or at after-school events after students return from summer break.

The decision was announced the same day North Montgomery Community School Corp. said it would not require masks beginning this fall. Both districts cited the current lack of an extended state mask mandate for schools.

Indiana’s mask order for schools and state buildings is set to expire June 30.

At South and North Montgomery, masks will be optional for unvaccinated individuals or those who wish to wear them on school grounds.

Face coverings are still mandated on school buses and other public transportation under federal rules.

Crawfordsville Community School Corp. says it hopes to seek board approval in July of COVID-19 policies for the coming school year.
