NEW MARKET — South Montgomery schools will stay open Nov. 19 during the Red For Ed rally at the statehouse.

Superintendent Dr. Shawn Greiner told school board members Monday during their regular meeting that as of now the district has seven teachers who plan to attend the Indianapolis event.

“We plan on staying open on Nov. 19,” he said. “If we do close, we will make up the day on Jan. 20th.”

The Red for Ed movement is a push for higher teacher salaries, a change in teacher evaluations and the repeal of new professional development requirements that teachers say are burdensome.

Several districts across the state, including Crawfordsville, have elected to close that day. Crawfordsville officials announced Sunday the district did not have enough substitute teachers to cover the expected teacher absences that day, and will make up the day Jan. 20. North Montgomery schools is sending a small delegation to the rally, but will remain open.

In other business, the school board:

• Discussed the complexity of iLearn testing students must face.

• Approved teacher contracts as well as the purchase of two activity buses.

• Approved the resignation of Brett Higgins, director of operations and technology. His resignation was effective Monday.

The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 in the corporation board room.
