Southmont clarifies rate

Clerical error impacted the 2019-20 statistic

Southmont High School is looking carefully at the graduation rate for 2019-20, after an Indiana Department of Education audit. The audit revealed that the distribution of an incorrect form between December 2018 and December 2019 caused the reported statistic to decline artificially from 94.16 percent to 88.36%.

“We were hopeful the state would allow us to retroactively correct the error. Because that was not possible, we are taking internal precautions moving forward,” said Dr. Shawn Greiner, Superintendent. “Nothing has changed with the student success rate at Southmont, and we are positive the accurate graduation rate will be reflected in future years.”

High school administration is in the process of working with the few affected families of the class of 2021 to proactively fix the previous error for the 2020-21 school year.

“Based on my short time here at Southmont High School, I’m confident in the great work of our teachers and staff to return next year to our historically high graduation rates,” said Jesse Burgess, Principal.

In previous years, the graduation rate at Southmont High School has been among the highest in the state. In 2018-19 the rate was 97.5%, and 94.8% in 2017-18.
