Southmont Schools informed of COVID positive case

District responding to confirmed diagnosis of individual who attended 6th grade orientation

On Sunday afternoon, Southmont Schools was made aware that a COVID positive case was present at the sixth grade orientation at Southmont Jr. High School on Aug. 4. All individuals who fall within the criteria of quarantine based on CDC guidelines have been identified and contacted by the Montgomery County Health Department.

Additionally, a staff member at New Market Elementary School has been identified as a close contact of a positive case. This person has quarantined based on CDC guidelines.

These individuals will not be allowed on school grounds until the completion of their quarantine period.

“Unfortunately, this is not a unique situation,” said Dr. Shawn Greiner, Superintendent of Schools. “As you may have seen in recent local, state and national news, many school districts have a similar protocol for quarantining students and/or staff members due to a positive case or being a close contact with someone who tests positive. The health and safety of our students, staff members, and community is our top priority.”

All Southmont Schools will remain in session.

“Despite our best efforts, we will likely continue to have positive cases in our school community this year,” Greiner said. “We will keep working closely with the Montgomery County Health Department to notify our school community, and we will continue to exceed all safety guidelines from health officials.”
