Southmont smacked by Danville

Posted

NEW MARKET — Southmont lost to Danville in a game that was postponed from Friday to Saturday due to inclement weather. Scoring on their first six drives, the Warriors did not give the Mounties any reason to celebrate their annual homecoming game. Danville won 41-6.

The game score at the half was 35-0 meaning the second half would be played with a running clock.

“It was a tough Saturday and obviously we would have love to have played Friday,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “I felt like we had a good plan going into the game, but I feel like we didn’t execute it as well as we needed to. I don’t think we played very well as a combined effort.”

One bright spot in the game was running back Avery Stadler. The junior scored South’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter. He toted the ball 19 times and gained 86 yards. It was never easy against the bigger and quicker Warrior defense. Stadler’s longest run was 14 yards.

Turnovers played a big part in the loss. The Mounties lost two fumbles and the Warrior defense recorded one interception.

Southmont (3-3, 2-2 SAC) rushed the ball 37 times for 131 yards. Mountie quarterback Heath Tolliver was under pressure the who game. The junior signal caller completed just three out of eight passes for 25 yards.

Danville (5-1, 3-0 SAC) racked up 317 total yards. Warrior sophomore quarterback Carter Ward completed seven of 10 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Danville rushed the ball for 172 yards and averaged nearly six yards per carry.

Danville sophomore Dalton Hood led the Warrior ground game with 83 yards on just seven carries.

It does not get any easier for the Mounties. Next week they travel to Sagamore Athletic Conference leader and undefeated Western Boone.

“We obviously have to take this week and see what we need to do to get better,” Hannum said. “We want to make sure we are playing our best football at the end of the year, so we have a couple of weeks now to get better.”

Danville will host Frankfort on Friday.
