In 1971, the first Southmont High School varsity football team made history on the gridiron by going 10-0 on the season. Since then thousands of graduates have passed through its growing campus, but that same Mountie pride remains timeless and strong. To celebrate its alumni, history and future, Southmont Schools will kick off its 50th anniversary year with a homecoming event Sept. 17 outside of Mountie Stadium from 4:30-7 p.m. Southmont will kick off against Crawfordsville High School at 7 p.m.
What’s a celebration without a little music? 2017 Southmont High School alumna and Nashville recording artist Kasey Burton will headline the event. Additional entertainment will be provided by Turn It Up Sound Productions and Southmont Royal Mountie Marching Band alumni.
Beginning at 4:30 p.m. food vendors will be available in the southwest parking lot. The community is invited to enjoy local favorites 1832 Brew, Aki Les Voy Takeria, Kona Ice, Podium BBQ, Street Penguin Gelato, Wildfire348 and pork burgers provided by the Southmont Golf Team.
“We are really excited to get our year of celebration started at homecoming,” Southmont High School Principal Jesse Burgess said. “Southmont has 50 years of rich tradition and history, and we hope to honor that with many of the events we have planned. The whole community is invited to join us for food, entertainment, free swag, and what is sure to be an excellent football game between the Mounties and our county rivals at Crawfordsville.”
Official 50th anniversary apparel is now available to purchase online through Top Line Athletics (https://southmont50.itemorder.com/sale). Deadline to order is Aug. 31, and merchandise will be ready before the homecoming event. Proceeds from sales will benefit the Southmont Education Fund at the Montgomery County Community Foundation.
