Street department seeks approval to use money for building study

The Crawfordsville Street Department is seeking to use money it receives every year from the stormwater utility to pay for its building study.

In August, the city hired a consultant to assess the department’s Vernon Street facilities, which need repairs, and help identify potential locations where a new building could be built.

The report from Mussett Nicholas Associates of Indianapolis is expected to be complete by the end of the year. The cost of the study is $25,700.

The stormwater utility reimburses the department for work performed during the previous year, which totaled $100,000 in 2020.

“As the year goes, we find places where we may need to fill some gaps,” street commissioner Scott Hesler said. Hesler then goes to the city council to request an additional appropriation.

The request received a favorable recommendation Monday from the council’s Fiscal Affairs Committee and will move to the full council next week. Part of the money will also help pay for recently purchased equipment.

In other business, the council’s Traffic, Parking and Safety Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a request from Wabash College to prohibit parking on the north side of Milligan Street between Crawford Street and Russell Avenue.

Restricting parking will make it safer for pedestrians and allow easier access for emergency vehicles, said Adriann Rhoades, Wabash’s director of planning, design and construction.

The Crawfordsville Fire Department had been preparing to submit a similar request.

Motorists would be able to park in the college’s new 90-space lot which is nearing completion at the corner of Milligan and Russell.

The lot was built as part of the conditional occupancy permit for the new Little Giant Stadium.
