A substitute teacher for Crawfordsville Community Schools has been suspended after school officials received confirmation of his arrest Saturday.
Steven Helsel, 40, of Crawfordsville was taken into custody during the early hours of Friday and has been charged with two counts of domestic battery on a person less than 14 years old, level 6 felonies, one count of domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor, and one count of attempt to commit domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor, according to court documents.
Police were called to 207 W. Jefferson St. shortly before 1 a.m. Friday in response to reports of an alleged domestic dispute, the probable cause affidavit in the case states.
Sgt. Kyle Walden of the Crawfordsville Police Department arrived at the Jefferson Street residence at about 12:45 a.m. and spoke with an adult female who alleged her daughter had been battered by Helsel, the affidavit reads. Walden also spoke with the children who alleged Helsel was “yelling at everyone, calling them names,” according to the affidavit.
One child interviewed alleged Helsel pulled her hair and struck her in the back of the neck area four times with a closed fist, the affidavit reads. A second child corroborated her allegations, adding that Helsel had allegedly pushed a third child in the home, according to court documents.
The adult female alleged Helsel was yelling at all of them and calling them names, according to the affidavit. She also stated she observed Helsel strike one of the children and pull her hair; she also stated Helsel had pushed her several times and that he was “very intoxicated,” the affidavit states.
Walden questioned Helsel, who said he had no memory of the incident, according to the affidavit. Walden then arrested Helsel and transported him to the Montgomery County Jail.
An initial hearing is set for 10 a.m. Monday in Montgomery County Superior Court I.
