The annual Sugar Creek Classic is set to begin Friday at Crawfordsville High School. Four Sagamore Athletic Conference rivals Crawfordsville, North Montgomery, Southmont and Western Boone will once again play for the coveted traveling canoe paddle.
Western Boone and North Montgomery will kickoff the tournament when they play the early game at 6 p.m. The Mounties and Athenians will play at approximately 7:30 p.m.
North Montgomery enters the tournament with a 3-6 record. The Stars are 2-7.
The Chargers have been led all season by senior Kelby Harwood who is averaging 20.2 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Senior Cameron Enlow is the only other Charger averaging in double figures with 10.3 PPG.
WeBo senior Gavin Hawkins is the stop scorer for the Stars. Hawkins is averaging 12.4 PPG. Sophomore Quin Westerfield is the only double-digit scorer for the Stars. Westerfield is averaging 11.4 per outing.
The Stars appear to have played the tougher schedule. Their opponents so far have accumulated a 47-35 record compared to North’s opponents overall record of 32-49.
The Stars are averaging 49.7 PPG and the Chargers are averaging 49.6. Defensively the Stars are giving up 55.1 PPG and the Charger opponents are averaging 52.4 PPG.
Southmont enters the tournament with the most impressive record. The Mounties are 6-1.
The Mounties are averaging 67.7 PPG behind three seniors. Vince Reimondo is scoring 13 PPG, Evan Watson is scoring 10.1 PPG, and Aaron McMasters is scoring 9.4 PPG.
Southmont has other players that are contributing offensively. Freshman Caden Miller is scoring 9.1 PPG and Austin Foley is adding 8.7 PPG.
Foley is the leading rebounder for the Mounties at 6.7 per game.
Crawfordsville enters the tournament with a 2-6 record but the two wins are from their last two games after losing the first six games.
The Athenians are averaging 44 PPG and giving up 58.4 PPG.
Sophomore Jacob Lee leads Crawfordsville with 11.3 PPG. Junior Mason McCarty and freshman Johnovan Smith are scoring 8.9 and 8.5 PPG, respectively.
Smith is the leading rebounder at 5 per game followed by McCarty’s 4.9. Lee is pulling down 4.5 RPG.
Southmont’s opponents’ record is 30-38 while the Crawfordsville opponents accumulative record is 38-37.
The consolation game will be 4 p.m. Saturday and the championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The one-day boys junior varsity basketball Sugar Creek Classic will be played Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Southmont.
