Sunshine Society launches Cheer campaign

Crawfordsville High School’s Sunshine Society is accepting referrals for its annual Cheer Certificate Campaign.

The campaign has been around since 1911, and is organized by the Crawfordsville High School Sunshine Society and the local chapter of Tri Kappa sorority.

The program asks for financial donations from the community and uses the funds to help families in the community by providing certificates that can be redeemed for groceries at Kroger in Crawfordsville. The certificates range in value based on family size.

Their goal for the 113th campaign is $18,000, last year they raised $14,388.

Krystal Rogers, Cheer Certificate Chair and a special education teacher at Crawfordsville High school, was apart of the Sunshine Society even as a student.

“I decided to do Sunshine because I just remember it giving back to the community,” Rogers said. “I see a lot of families in our community who do struggle. And I know the benefit of giving back.”

Isla Seward, a CHS senior and student president of Sunshine Society, said her favorite part of the Cheer Certificate Campaign is knowing she’s helping others in the community.

“I always enjoy completing the data entries and stuffing the certificates, but the purpose behind it all, giving people the happiness they deserve around the holidays, is my favorite,” Seward said.

“My favorite part about the cheer certificates is giving back to the community during a time when it is needed most,” said Marie Hesler, CHS junior and Sunshine Society’s student secretary.

Anyone can nominate up to four families or individuals they believe are in need. Individuals can also nominate themselves.

“So if you are struggling and you have a family and you have kids or even if you’re just by yourself and you’re really struggling, we do want you to nominate yourself,” said Rogers.

The deadline to make a referral is Dec. 6. All referrals must be on an official form or a form that contains all of the requested information.

The official form appears in today’s edition of the Journal Review and can be found online at www.journalreview.com. The form will also be published throughout the week as referrals are still being accepted.

Referral forms should be sent to Tri Kappa Sorority, P.O. Box 368, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.

Donations to the campaign can be made in honor of or in memory of family or friends or made anonymously.

Donations will be accepted through mid January and should be sent to CHS Sunshine Society, P.O. Box 243, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.

The final day to redeem the certificates is Jan. 31.
