Surveying wraps up for planned overpass project

Surveying work has wrapped up in the planned overpass project at U.S. 136 and Nucor Road, a consultant told the Montgomery County Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday.

Property owners have largely expressed support for the proposed improvements, which still need funding.

“They were saying they were getting a lot of noise at that intersection, just as trucks were coming down the hill on Nucor Road they were kind of slamming on the brakes and it was a big disturbance so they were pretty supportive of having a bridge there to kind of alleviate that noise,” said Katlyn Shergalis, structural team leader at Lochmueller Group, the project’s engineering firm.

Economic development officials say the upgrades are necessary to attract companies to the Nucor Road corridor.

The commission unanimously approved a measure to spend up to $175,640 on the next phase of the engineering process, allowing the project to be submitted for funding. Plan commissioner John Frey said he hoped the improvements would qualify for federal stimulus money.

Another proposal envisioning a high-speed thoroughfare in the corridor is moving off the drawing board. The commission accepted a feasibility study of a potential multi-stage project for C.R. 300S and C.R. 775E.

The study, prepared by engineering firm American Structurepoint, lays out and prioritizes a list of scenarios to connect three major development areas in the county and provide access to regional corridors.
