Athenians swept by Bulldogs

The Crawfordsville boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams celebrated senior night against Brownsburg on Thursday. The Bulldogs beat the Athenians 143-43 on the girls side, and 147-39 on the boys side.

Alyx Bannon won a pair of events for Crawfordsville — swimming to a win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.52 seconds and in the 100 freestyle in 56.99 seconds.

Crawfordsville celebrated six seniors including Jaden Azar, Abby Bannon, Faith Rogers, Ronja Siebert, Cole Hudson, and Cameron Nordenbrock.

“That senior group has really matured,” Athenians coach Kevin Hedrick said. “And they’ve probably done as much leadership this year as I’ve seen a senior group do. We will miss them, and be able to replace a couple of them as we always do.”

Azar was sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 34.01 seconds, while Abby Bannon was fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:41.58, and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.87. Nordenbrock was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.16, and sixth in the 50 freestyle, while Hudson was fifth in the 50 freestyle in 26.58 seconds. Hudson was sixth in the 100 freestyle.

Rogers placed fifth in the diving portion with a mark of 125.20.

The Athenians, who competed against Terre Haute North on Tuesday, Brownsburg, and will travel to Lafayette Jeff next week, use this stretch of the season to measure themselves with some of the best teams in the area as they prep for the IHSAA state tournament.

“We come off of a conference meet where we are typically one of the top teams in the conference,” Crawfordsville coach Kevin Hedrick said. “This is not a bad way for the kids to kind of remember that they have to dig in and work hard. We want to be a caliber of Brownsburg, and Harrison, Terre Haute North and Jeff. We are there, we just have to get over that hump, and believe that we are that caliber of team.”
