The Southmont boys’ tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 5-0 loss to No. 6 Terre Haute South in the regional final on Tuesday.

“That’s a totally different level of tennis,” Southmont coach Nathan Poynter said after the loss. “Terre Haute South is a great team, and we hope they go a long ways, because that makes us feel better too.”

At No. 1 singles Canaan Sellers defeated Adam Cox 6-0, 6-0, while Matthew Roberts beat Trevor McKinney 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Caleb Morris beat Conner McVay 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.

The duo of Seth Gage and Jacob Thacker beat Micah Korhorn and Reese Long 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Aiden Fellows and Stephen Kallubhavi beat Luke Tesmer and EJ Brewer 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Poynter was proud of the way the season ended, and is looking forward to big things ahead for the program.

“Our goal is to win a regional before this young class is over,” Poynter said of his team full of youth. “We have a good number of athletes in this young class.”
