TENNIS: Mounties sweep Chargers

LINDEN — Southmont came one step closer to completing a one-year turnaround by securing a Montgomery County boy’s tennis title with a 5-0 win over North Montgomery on Monday.

After winning the county and Sagamore Conference titles in 2017, the Mounties took a step backward last season, but quickly returned to winning ways this fall.

“It’s a big change,” Southmont coach Nathan Poynter said. “Last year I think we only won three matches, which was the worst record we’ve had since I’ve been coaching. And then to turn around this year as of right now we’ve only lost three matches, and that’s a big step. The seniors have really stepped up. They’ve played so much better than a year ago.”

The Mounties dominated the Chargers on Tuesday by winning every game to improve their record to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.

At No. 1 singles Adam Cox defeated Hunter Kashon 6-0, 6-0, while Trevor McKinney beat Carter Livingston 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, and Conner McVay beat Brookes Walters 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Reese Long and Micah Korhorn defeated Will McKinniss and Ben Eldridge and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Luke Tesmer and EJ Brewer beat Hayden Turner and Haze Kashon 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

Southmont host Lebanon on Thursday before they start their quest for a sectional title for the first time since 1991.
