VEEDERSBURG — Fountain Central’s boys tennis team rolled past North Montgomery 5-0 on Tuesday night.
Carson Eberly defeat Jakob Kirsch 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Cody Linville blanked Carter Livingston 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
With five returners back from last season, the Mustangs often made it look easy earning their first win of the season.
“We’ve got five players out of seven that have had at least a year of tennis under their belt at the varsity level,” Mustangs coach Chris Webb said. “So we bring quite a bit of experience back. I’m not sure we run as deep as maybe we have the last year or two.”
At the No. 3 singles spot Brent Myers defeated Brooks Long 6-0, 6-1, while Jacob Keeling and Denton Otero beat Will McKinnis and Hunter Kashon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Sawyer Keeling and CJ Yager beat Haze Kashon and Ben Eldridge at No. 2 doubles.
With the Chargers still searching for their first win, coach Shannon Joyce says she’s marking improvement match by match for her young team.
“Right now we are a competitive team, and I know what it feels like to want win, and we aren’t having that success right now,” she said. “But we are seeing improvements every match, whether it’s our ground strokes or our serves. So we are kind of gauging our success on improvements of those fundamentals as we go through on our strategy.”
Joyce noted one bright spot out of her lineup at No. 3 singles in the loss to the Mustangs.
“We were really impressed with Brooks (Walters) tonight who played three singles for us,” she said. “We just really appreciate when we give him advice or give him a tip, he will take it and try to do the best he can do with that. And he always has a positive attitude when he’s out on the court, and he tries his best every single match.”
Fountain Central will travel to Southmont today to square off against the Mounties, and Webb knows it will be a tough match.
“There’s a lot of good teams on our schedule,” he said. “I know Southmont tomorrow night. The Cox kid may be a freshman, but he’s played a lot of tennis and he’s really really good. Carson has to be ready to go tomorrow. I think that No. 1 singles spot is a spot where there is no guarantee.”
North Montgomery hosts an invitational on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
