TENNIS: Mustangs down Chargers in tennis

Posted

LINDEN — Fountain Central earned a hard-fought 3-2 win in girls’ tennis on Wednesday night at North Montgomery.

Haley Webb (No. 2 singles), Angela Gonzalez (No. 3 singles), and Tyler Bowling and Marylee Muniz (No. 2 doubles) picked up wins for the Mustangs

“It is good,” Fountain Central coach David Kight said. “I had this one circled. They’ve gotten a lot better. We are really happy to one get a win against a good team, that’s a good tennis team and we were able to get three spots tonight and we are going to leave happy with that.”

Webb defeated Sydnee Turner 6-2, 6-3, while Gonzalez held on for a 6-1, 6-4 win over Carlie DeSmet. Bowling and Muniz paired up to beat Courtney Engels and Paige Hudson 6-2, 6-2.

“At two doubles, Tyler and Marylee are really coming along,” Kight added. “Just to see them play a complete two sets where they didn’t beat themselves. And then that’s a really good win for Angela. And then Haley did just what Haley does. Honestly coming into the match I thought all five spots were coin flips. Give them a lot of credit, Kaitlyn played fantastic and they did a nice job at one doubles to kind of take us out of our game.”

Kaitlyn Greenlee picked up a key win for the Chargers at No. 1 singles, beating Lillie Fishero 6-1, 6-2.

“She (Greenlee) played great tonight,” North Montgomery coach Shannon Collier said. “She played smart and did the things she needed to do. Placed the ball well and hit good angles when she needed to. She faced a good opponent and felt like they both played pretty well.”

North Montgomery also picked up a win at No. 1 doubles with Joy Davis and Allison Guard beating Emily Jimenez and Paige Scheurich 6-2, 6-3. Collier has seen her team improve down the stretch the last couple of weeks, especially at the doubles positions.

“I think we are a different team than we were at the beginning of the season,” she said. “Just like everybody else we had to get that year back and get back into a routine. I think now that we have gotten back into it we’ve made a lot of improvements and my doubles are more in sync.”
