Thomas A. “Tom” Townsend, 76, of Monticello and formerly of the Wingate community, passed away at 10:22 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2020 in Monticello Health Care, following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 8, 1944, at Crawfordsville, son of the late Marvin and Lorene Clodfelter Townsend.

Tom attended school through his junior year at Richland Township High School and graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1962. He served with the Army National Guard 1964-1976 attaining the rank of Captain.

He attended private flight training and earned his helicopter pilot license in 1973. Tom operated a crop dusting business out of the Wingate area. In 1976 he suffered severe injuries in a crash while spraying, which ended his flying career. For a few years following his crash, he continued to operate a crop dusting operation called Whirlybirds Inc. In the 80’s he moved to Lafayette and managed the Halsmer Airport.

Tom moved from Lafayette to Monticello to live on the lake, where his family spent time as he was growing up. Tom enjoyed living on the lake. He was a Patriot who loved his country and was a member of the American Legion and the Church of Christ in Monticello.

Surviving are: daughter Kristy Townsend of Lafayette; sons, Frank (Ann) Townsend of Danville, Indiana, and Todd (Kathy) Townsend of Crawfordsville; and brother John (Clara Ann) Townsend of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tom’s family will hold a public graveside interment in the spring. Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate is assisting the family.
