Tox-Away Day takes place at North Montgomery

LINDEN — Hundreds of Montgomery County residents took advantage of the annual Montgomery County Solid Waste Management Tox-a-Way Day on Saturday. Approximately 300 vehicles were unloaded of tires, toxic fluids, batteries, appliances and electronics.

“This is a great service for Montgomery County”, commissioner secretary Lori Dossett said as she was manning the front entrance to the dump off sites. “We had a lot of people came through and they were very appreciative.”

The MCSW was established three years ago when local officials made the decision to form their own waste district to save money. This is the second year they have organized a Tox-Away-Day at North Montgomery High School.

The MCSW hires an outside firm, Nu Genesis of Martinsville, to work the event. The company is manned by many of the owner’s relatives and local people. This year some county residents took advantage took advantage to earn some hours the court has deemed they owe.

“We do have six volunteers working who need to accumulate community corrections volunteer hours”, Dossett said. “It is good to be able to offer them the opportunity.

Nu Genesis travels throughout Indiana for other similar events. They begin in April and work until October and have events scheduled every weekend.

Many of the local residents taking advantage of the event were cleaning out homes including homes of deceased relatives or their own garages, basements or barns.

County resident Dick German used the occasion to get rid of toxic fluids he found in a house the wants to eventually sell.

“We found this stuff in a house we are cleaning up and didn’t know what it was,” German said. “This is a great way to get rid of it.”

The MCSW board will meet today at 1 p.m. at the Crawfordsville City Building to approve the 2023 budget. Both the county and city share the cost of the organization. County Commissioner Dan Guard serves as president of the board.
