TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW: Chargers hope to continue track and field success

The North Montgomery track and field team has been on a tear over the last several years, including a boys’ Sagamore Conference championship in 2019.

While many of the stars from the 2019 season are gone, the Chargers are still hopeful of continuing success this spring after a lost season in 2020.

“Missing last season will hurt the most with experience,” North Montgomery track and field coach Josh Thompson said. “We will have more younger athletes who will be competing in larger roles without a year of experience.”

Thompson expects many underclassmen to contribute, but the Chargers do return a lot of experience as well.

On the boys’ side, seniors Porter Bennett, James McClerkin, Joel Clouser and juniors Treyce Pittman, Ben Cody, Gabe Laws, Benjamin Pietsch, Wil Campbell, and Eli McCartney. On the girls’ side, seniors Grace McClaskey, Sidney Campbell, and Kelsey Anderson, and juniors Madi Welch, Claire Bonwell, Maggie Michael, Lydia Dugard, and Katie Rice.

“Our athletes have gotten off to a great start with the training,” Thompson said. “They have been working hard each day and are focused on continual improvement.”

Thompson says the Chargers will lack experience in some areas, but have a strength in leadership from the upperclassmen and have a goal of performing their best at seasons’ end.

“We will focus on performing well at the end of the season to give us the best opportunity to be successful in the County, Conference, and Sectional meets,” he said.

North Montgomery will open the season on Tuesday, April 6 at Lafayette Harrison.
