Trio named top of the class at FCHS

VEEDERSBURG — The Fountain Central High School Class of 2022 was led by co-valedictorians Carter Austin Merryman and Austin Pickett. Salutatorian was Seth Martin.

Merryman is the son of Kevin and Kelly Merryman of Veedersburg.

His activities include: Mustang Maniacs, Mustang Mentor, class officer, student council, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and member of First Baptist Church, Covington.

He played four years of tennis with All-Conference, All Bi-County and two sectional championship and one individual sectional championship. He also played four years of basketball with Academic All-State Honorable mention and two years of golf.

Merryman plans to attend Purdue University, West Lafayette, and study computer engineering.

Pickett is the son of Michael and Amber Pickett, Veedersburg.

While in high school, he participated in academic bowls, played football, wrestled and ran track. He was a member of the National Honor Society and served as a youth football camp coach and junior high wrestling team student assistant coach.

Pickett assisted in the creation of the Veedersburg mural and volunteered with the Flex-N-Gate Inc. Appreciation Day. He was named an Indiana Rising Star.

Pickett plans to attend Wabash College to study politics, philosophy and economics and will play football for the Little Giants.

Martin is the son of Matt and Lisa Martin of Kingman.

He is a member of First Baptist Church, Covington, and its youth group. He served as class president for two years and vice president for one year. He was a member of FFA, having served as president, treasurer and junior advisor and was on the school’s national advancing livestock judging team and made the Indiana All-State livestock judging team, as well as a two time state qualifier in extemporaneous speaking.

Martin is member of 4-H and has shown livestock for 10 years (cattle, swine and goats) as well as exhibiting corn and soybeans and farm toy displays earning multiple grand and reserve grand champions in all of those things. He regularly shows livestock around the nation.

Martin was the National Honor Society president; former vice president of the Spanish club; a Mustang Mentor; Fellowship of Christian Athletes member; and choir member. He played varsity basketball, football, track and field and golf. He was also named an Indiana Rising Star for two years for academic achievement.

Martin obtained his private pilot’s license at the age of 17. He plans to attend Purdue University to study professional flight technology to become an airline pilot. He also plans to minor in farm management to help manage the family farm.
