VOLLEYBALL: Athenians sweep Patriots, stay unbeaten

Posted

The Crawfordsville volleyball team pushed its record to a perfect 6-0 with a convincing sweep over Seeger on Thursday night (25-15, 25-13, 25-12).

They also welcomed back Liddy McCarty and Shea Williamson, who saw the court for the first time in 2020.

“It was really nice,” Crawfordsville coach Kelly Johnson said. “Those kids have been really patient, they’ve worked hard when they got back and I’m proud of both Shea and Liddy for hanging tough.”

The pair of juniors provided an immediate spark for the Athenians. Williamson had 11 digs, nine assists, three kills and ace, while McCarty added a pair of digs.

Crawfordsville was slowed by Seeger out of the gate in the first set, but took the lead for good 9-8 and cruised to an early 1-0 lead. The Athenians doubled the Patriots (3-4) up in the second set by taking an 18-9 lead, and ultimately cruised to the clean sweep.

Macy Bruton continued to lead Crawfordsville’s hitting with 26 kills, and defensively added 11 digs, but the play at the net by Alyx Bannon and Hallie Gayler stood out. Bannon had six kills and four blocks, while Gayler added five kills, a block, and an ace.

“Alyx (Bannon) did a fantastic job, and so did Hallie (Gayler),” Johnson said. “We dropped back to a single block, because there was really no need for a double, and those two do a nice job of the swing block.”

Laine Schlicher added 26 assists, nine digs, and two aces, while Allyson Barton had six digs and an ace. Olivia Reed led the defense with a team-best 18 digs.

Crawfordsville, who has lost just one set all season, will take its perfect record into a home match with Delphi on Saturday.

“Wins give you confidence, and I think they are well deserved wins,” Johnson added. “We haven’t just gone out there and played partial volleyball. We’ve played 100% and good things have happened.”
