VOLLEYBALL: Mounties earn hard fought sweep over Chargers

Posted

NEW MARKET — North Montgomery led in every set, but in the end Southmont prevailed with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-21) win over the Chargers in a Montgomery County volleyball tilt on Tuesday night.

“It’s great to see them not give up,” Southmont coach Lauran Nichols said. “to not let a set go because we were behind at one point. So they really pushed through it.”

North Montgomery led 15-14 midway through the first set, before Southmont went on a 6-0 run. In the second set a 12-6 Charger lead quickly turned to a 18-6 run by the Mounties. And a 4-1 lead in the third quickly disappeared as well.

The continued improvement is key though for North Montgomery, who fell to 0-4, 0-3 SAC on the season.

“The energy and hustle was there,” Charger first-year coach Whitney Hutson said. “We were listening a lot better.”

Kaley Remley led the Mounties with 12 digs, 12 kills, and five aces, while Sidney Veatch had 13 assists, seven kills, five digs, and three aces.

Chelsea Veatch added 11 assists, four aces, and four kills, while Makia Pierce had five blocks.

Southmont improves to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in the SAC.

“I think it’s great to see them continue to come into their own,” Nichols said. “and that’s going to take a while. We didn’t have summer, we didn’t have scrimmages. We haven’t ran a 6-2 ever and so I think each match seeing that and seeing them gel a little bit more and people step up where they need to is reassuring.”

Madi Welch led the Chargers with 10 assists and a kill, while Trinity Schroeder had five kills and Mallory Morehouse had five digs. North Montgomery had access to their full lineup for the first time all season, and Hutson knows it will take time to get into a groove.

“It’s nice to have our whole team finally back together,”  she said. “We are just trying to get in a groove. It’s still a work in progress, trying to get their confidence built back up.”

North Montgomery is at Riverton Parke tonight, while Southmont host Sagamore Conference foe Western Boone on Saturday.
