VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW: Mounties hope to continue success

Posted

The Southmont volleyball team is still hungry for success.

And with strong leaders, coaches Erin Barry and Casey Phillips expect it.

“We are counting on our Juniors to step up and lead this team, especially Chelsea Veatch and Regan Remley who both started Varsity as freshmen,” the co-coaches said.

Veatch had 163 digs and 210 assists last season as a sophomore, while Remley had 82 kills and 58 digs.

Elizabeth Conkright is the Mounties lone senior and Makia Pierce also returns experience and leadership.

“Strong leadership and team cohesion will be very important this year,” Barry and Phillips said. “We hope to continue to see their strong work ethic at practice and improvements made every day. There’s already been a huge change in their play in the two short weeks we’ve been practicing.”

The Mounties will also look to libero Tayler Anderson, Dara Watson and Kali Todd this season.

Barry and Phillips understand the expectation for this team is to win — and they believe the success can continue. Southmont has enjoyed three winning seasons in a row, including a sectional title in 2019.

“One of their strengths is they are vocal on the court,” Barry and Phillips added. “They are ‘natural’ coaches to the incoming freshman. They’re going into this season as one big family and these girls all like to win. Their team quote is ‘whatever it takes.’”
