VOLLEYBALL: Stars comeback to beat Athenians, Chargers sweep Red Ramblers

Posted

The Western Boone volleyball team overcame a 1-0 hole to down Crawfordsville 3-1 and give the Athenians their second Sagamore Conference and overall loss of the season.

Crawfordsville (19-2, 2-2 SAC) dominated its way to a 25-14 win in the first set, before the Stars (13-5, 4-0 SAC) won three straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-21).

The Athenians led early in sets No. 3 and 4, but Western Boone rallied each time to put Crawfordsville away.

“We played much more aggresively in our offense in game 1,” Crawfordsville coach Kelly Johnson said. “and we got stuck in a couple of weaker rotations that hurt us a little bit in game 2 and a couple of other times, but that is no excuse. I felt like we didn’t pass the ball as well as we should have tonight.”

“Western Boone, give them credit, I thought their outside hitters did a nice job tonight. Our kids fought hard, and they never gave up, and were in it until the end.”

Macy Bruton led the Athenians with 23 kills, 20 digs, and 8 aces, while Laine Schlicher had 27 assists, 18 digs, 3 kills and a pair of aces. Hallie Gayler added 12 kills, 3 blocks and an ace, while Shea Williamson had 15 assists, 10 digs and three kills.

Olivia Reed had 24 digs, two assists, and a kill, while Allyson Barton had 10 digs, Alyx Bannon seven kills and five blocks, and Liddy McCarty a dig.
