VOLLEYBALL: Trojans down Athenians

Posted

A long week came to a close as the Crawfordsville volleyball team wrapped up the regular season on Thursday night with a 3-1 loss to Covington.

After dominating the first set 25-14, the Athenians showed fatigue as a solid 18-7 Trojans team won three straight sets to steal the match and drop Crawfordsville to 22-4 heading into tournament play next week.

“Covington’s defense is tough, and I knew they weren’t going to lay down and quit even after us pounding them in that first set,” Crawfordsville coach Kelly Johnson said. “We played an exceptional, probably the best one game we’ve played as a team. Covington is a good team and they did a nice job tonight. I think tonight we were tired.”

Macy Bruton led the Athenians with 34 kills, 13 digs, and three aces, while Laine Schlicher had 27 assists, 12 digs, and a pair of aces and kills. Shea Williamson had 11 digs, 10 assists, and two aces, while Olivia Reed had 18 digs, two assists and a kill, and Hallie Gayler had six kills and four blocks. Allyson Barton had seven digs and Liddy McCarty three digs and a block.

Crawfordsville is off until the sectional opener at Benton Central on Thursday against Twin Lakes.
