Volunteers needed for MXoN activities

The local planning committee preparing for the Oct. 2-5 Motocross of Nations coming to Crawfordsville is looking for volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to help with the fan experience in and around the city.

As stated on the city’s MXoN website the volunteers goal is “to make the global event an unforgettable experience.”

Volunteers will be able to see the behind-the-scenes of the world’s largest race of the year and will help welcome visitors to Montgomery County. Since the event takes on an “Olympics” feel, there will be many international visitors.

Most importantly, the goal of the committee is to make the race weekend the best in the 78-year history of the MXoN race.

There are three major areas that need an army of volunteers.

The first is helping with events at Ironman Raceway. The tasks will include assisting with race logistics, rider and team coordination and race-day operations.

The second area where volunteers are needed is within the Crawfordsville community. Volunteers will help at key locations including information booths, parking areas and public events.

One of the most visible community events being planned is the Oct. 3 MXoN parade to take place downtown Crawfordsville. Parade organizers are working hard to make the event memorable but need volunteers to make it happen. One of the major highlights of the parade will be in front of the courthouse when each team from nearly 40 countries will be introduced. The parade route will be similar to the annual Christmas parade route.

Parade volunteers will assist teams, parade participants and help manage crowd flow.

Some of the unique volunteer options include being available to answer questions about the community and to help visitors find answers. Volunteers helping with visitors, especially the visitors from other countries, will be a key toward the success of the event.

Presently the committee is contracting with a shuttle bus service. The buses will deliver race fans to areas such as restaurants, retail shopping, downtown and local tourists attractions after originating at the track. Volunteers could be used to help visitors get to the places they want to go.

An online sign-up sheet is available for those wanting to volunteer. The link can be found on the Ironman Raceway Facebook page and on the City of Crawfordsville’s website. Website visitors need to navigate to the MXoN information link located under the “Play Here” button found at the top of the city’s website at www.crawfordsville.net .

The race is expected to bring 35,000 fans to Crawfordsville.

Early ticket sales for the race are good. Many international fans and fans from the United States are purchasing tickets. County hotels are booked as well as out-of-town hotels. Local campgrounds are filling up fast and residents are renting their homes by signing up on Airbnb and other rental lodging sites.
