VSO raising money for gift drive

The Montgomery County Veterans Service Office is asking the community to open its checkbook for a gift drive for local veterans in nursing homes.

Veterans service officer Joe Ellis started the drive three years ago to purchase former service members with game books and toiletries.

“But I had enough money that I haven’t had to ask,” Ellis said.

The office is buying gifts for 50 veterans this year. Items include word search and crossword books, tissues, throw blankets, washcloths, Checkers games, toothbrushes, toothpaste, gift bags and Dial soap.

Ellis said the office needs $300 to cover all of the gifts. Donations should be sent to the Veterans Service Office, 110 W. South Blvd., Crawfordsville.

Deadline is Dec. 1. The office will distribute the gifts sometime in mid-December, Ellis said.
