FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Freshman Jarrod Kirsch dominated on Thursday, striking out eight Washington College (MD) hitters over six innings of work to help power the Wabash College Little Giants past the Shoremen 8-1.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Kirsch (1-0) held Washington (9-4) to one run on five hits and one walk for Wabash (6-3). Dylan Haslett also made an impact on the mound for the Little Giants, throwing three shutout innings while allowing one hit, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Offensively, the Little Giants were paced by Michael Galanos, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, a walk and three RBI. Will Fremion also furnished a standout performance at the dish, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Miles Cvelbar also contributed for Wabash, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate, adding two walks and an RBI.
The Little Giants got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Wabash got on the board thanks to Fremion’s RBI double with two outs.
The Shoremen tied the ballgame at one before the Little Giants came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Phillips brought home a run with a groundout. Ben Henke added an RBI with a single to right, and Cvelbar scored Henke with a single to left, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of the Little Giants.
Wabash expanded its lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Galanos. The senior second baseman drilled a two-run single in the eighth inning after Evan Neukem put Wabash up 6-1 with a bases-loaded walk.
