Wabash captured one title and five top-seven finishes at the non-scoring Greyhound Open on Sunday at the University of Indianapolis.
Chase Baczek claimed the first-place finish for the Little Giants by winning the 197-pound weight class. The senior started with back-to-back 15-0 tech fall victories in the first two rounds. He pinned Bellarmine’s Evan Grazzini in the closing seconds of the quarterfinals, then won an 8-3 contest against Kennedy Wyatt from Bellarmine in the semis. Baczek secured the title with a 6-4 victory in the finals.
James Day scored a second-place finish with three pins and a major decision in the 133-pound bracket. He picked up two pins in the opening round, then earned a 15-4 major decision in the quarterfinals. He pinned Giovanni Diaz from Glenville State University in the semis but lost a 1-0 decision in the finals to Porter Matecki from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the championship bout.
Daniel Uribe earned a second-place finish at 149 pounds by scoring one pin and two tech falls. He started with an opening round pin, then scored a 20-4 tech fall in the second round. An 18-0 victory in the third round propelled Uribe to the quarterfinals, where he won a 13-10 decision in a sudden victory. Uribe won his semifinal match 16-9 but lost to Anthony Bahl 12-4 in the finals.
Jaylen Young finished in third place in the 174-pound weight class. He started the day with a pin, then scored a 16-4 major decision to advance in the bracket. Another major decision, this time by a score of 17-6 in the quarterfinal round, sent Young to the semifinals. He rebounded from a loss in that round by scoring a 6-5 decision in the consolation semis, then defeated Bellarmine’s Tristin Greene 4-1 with a sudden victory to capture third place.
Heavyweight Titus Waters placed third in his weight class, scoring a pin and a tech fall for the tournament. He opened with a pin of Marian’s Enoch Shodeinde. Waters won a 19-8 major decision over the University of Indianapolis’ Elijah Hinshaw, then won an ultimate tiebreaker in the quarterfinals. Waters lost in the semis but got a medical forfeit in the finals to place third overall.
Mawuli Nevis added a seventh-place finish at 165 pounds for the Little Giants. He won a 7-6 in the opening round against Caden Ernd from Illinois, then scored a 16-11 win against Noah Hall from Bellarmine in the next round. Nevis followed a loss in the quarterfinals with a 10-2 victory in the consolation round on the way to his seventh-place finish.
Wabash competes at the Mid-States Championship Tournament hosted by Manchester University on Saturday.
