COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wabash College baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep at Capital University on Sunday. The Little Giants exploded for 15 runs in both games, winning game one 15-9 before taking a 15-4 victory in eight innings in game two.
Wabash (20-7) averaged 14.75 runs per game over the four-game weekend stretch after scoring 15 and 14 runs in two victories at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
GAME 1 | Wabash 15, Capital 9
Wabash got contributions from every part of its lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Little Giants put 15 runs on the board to knock off the Capital Crusaders 15-9 in game one on Sunday.
Jackson Fronek (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Wabash (18-7). The southpaw went 2.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Jackson Woehr also made an impact on the mound for the Little Giants, throwing two shutout innings while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Little Giants were paced by Will McKinzie, who went 3-for-5 on the day with his second home run in as many days and three RBI. Will Phillips put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Caleb Ellspermann also chipped in for Wabash, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding three RBI.
Trailing 2-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the second inning. Wabash’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Phillips.
The Crusaders tied the ballgame at four before the Little Giants came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. The Wabash offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ellspermann and a two-run single from McKinzie, which brought the score to 10-4 in favor of the Little Giants.
Capital narrowed Wabash’s lead to 10-8 before the Little Giants stretched the advantage to 12-8 in the fifth inning.
The Crusaders gained ground, closing the gap to 12-9 until Wabash added some insurance in the seventh. The Little Giants picked up two runs when a single from DJ Mendez scored McKinzie and Miles Cvelbar, bringing the score to 14-9 in favor of Wabash.
The Little Giants held Capital off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 15-9 in the ninth inning. Wabash picked up a run on McKinzie’s leadoff home run. The score remained 15-9 for the rest of the game as the Little Giants coasted to the win.
GAME 2 | Wabash 15, Capital 4
Will Fremion racked up four RBIs to help lead Wabash past Capital Crusaders 15-4.
Fremion went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two walks in addition to his four RBIs for the Little Giants. Camden Scheidt also furnished a standout effort, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Will Wallace also helped out for Wabash, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding two RBI.
Finn Randolph (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Wabash (20-7). The right-hander went 2.1 shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four. Trey Pitcock also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering one run without allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out three to earn his first save.
The Little Giants got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Wabash’s offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including Scheidt’s two-run single.
The Crusaders then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 7-3 until the Little Giants expanded their advantage in the fifth. Wabash pushed across two runs in the inning, bringing the Little Giants lead to 9-3.
Wabash kept Capital without a run before building its lead to 11-3 in the seventh inning. The Little Giants produced a two-run frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Fremion.
Wabash kept the Crusaders scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Little Giants scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Will Fremion, bringing the Wabash advantage to 15-3. Capital put one run on the scoreboard before the game ended, but the Little Giants still coasted to the 15-4 win.
