FORT PIERCE, Florida — Though it had plenty of opportunities, Wabash had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 10 Little Giants on base in an 8-5 setback at the hands of the Penn State-Behrend Behrend Lions on Sunday.
Junior Caleb Everson (1-1) got the ball to start for Wabash (3-3) and took the loss. Senior Gavin Pierson was a bright spot for the Little Giants, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
At the plate, the Little Giants were led by sophomore Will Fremion, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a walk and two RBI. Junior Ben Henke compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Will Phillips also helped out for Wabash, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
The Little Giants were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Wabash got an RBI single from junior Will McKinzie, scoring Fremion from second base.
Penn State Behrend (3-2) broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the sixth inning, when the Little Giants got back on the scoreboard. Wabash scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Fremion, which tightened the Lions lead to 6-2.
Wabash kept the Lions off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 6-5 in the seventh. The Little Giants were unable to get any closer, as Penn State-Behrend added two runs to it tally on the way to an 8-5 final.
