DANVILLE — North Montgomery ran into a buzz saw at Danville on Friday. The Warriors ran and passed their way to 47-14 victory and claimed the outright Sagamore Athletic Conference Championship.
Danville dominated the game from start to finish and Charger coach Josh Thompson was not particularly pleased with this team’s performance.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game but I was not real happy with the way we played,” Thompson said. “We didn’t have much enthusiasm at the start and it showed.”
Danville scored on every possession in the first half. Warrior sophomore quarterback Carter Ward was 9-fo-15 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
The Warrior ground attack churned out 269 yards led by junior Ethan Wooten’s 105 yards and two touchdowns.
In the second quarter Danville used razzle dazzle plays to put the game out of reach. A double reverse pass led to a wide open Jace Scrafton pass from for a score. The Warriors next possession they ran a hook and ladder play to score again making the scare 35-0 in the first half. Another late quarter score made the score 41-0 at the break.
Danville (8-1, 7-0 SAC) played their substitutes in the second half and the Chargers were able to get their first score when sophomore Dakota Glasson scored from four yards out.
The Chargers second score came in the fourth quarter when sophomore Lucky Young had a pick-six. Young jumped the pass into the flat and returned the ball 60 yards for the score. Young also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.
With victory well in hand, Danville hurried to the line of scrimmage with :06 left in the game. With the clock running, the Danville reserves scored on a 4-yard run as the clock ran out.
The Charger offense was shut down to 71 yards rushing and 37 yards passing for a total of 108 yards.
After the game Thompson’s comments were quickly directed to Friday’s sectional matchup at Southmont.
“I told the guys that we are done with this game and we are turning our attention to Southmont,” Thompson said. “We are moving on and getting ready for the sectional.”
North Montgomery (3-6, 3-4 SAC) travels to Southmont (3-6, 2-5 SAC) for a 7 p.m. Friday sectional game.
