A DUI checkpoint maintained by city police for more than two hours Friday along U.S. 231 on Crawfordsville’s north side resulted in 152 tested drivers.
Of those who entered the checkpoint, as part of the ongoing national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, 15 were issued warnings for various traffic or equipment violations.
Additionally, two drivers were issued citations for never having acquired a license, and one was cited for driving without insurance.
Increased patrols were also looking for impaired drivers. Motorists may be arrested for DUI in Indiana if found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
However, no drivers were arrested for DUI on Friday.
It is illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher in Indiana. Drivers under the age of 21 with a BAC of 0.02 or higher are subject to fines and may lose their license for up to a year. An arrest for DUI results in an automatic driver’s license suspension.
A grant through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute provided the funds necessary to bring in extra patrol Friday. The project is aimed at reducing impaired driving and driving-related motorcycle and automobile crashes.
In 2018, 83 people were killed in Indiana as a result of alcohol-related collisions, or 10 percent of the state’s overall traffic fatalities.
Sobriety checkpoints are expected across the state this coming Labor Day weekend.
