Athenians defend Early Bird Invite title

For the second straight season Crawfordsville volleyball is off to yet another great start. CHS traveled to compete in the Early Bird Invite hosted by North Putnam on Saturday looking to defend their title from a year ago. That’s exactly what the Athenians would do as they went a perfect 4-0 on the day to defend their championship crown.

The day got started for CHS by defeated Mooresville 2-1 (25-18, 23-25, 15-9), then downing county rival Southmont 2-0 (25-21, 25-11). A 2-0 (25-17, 25-22) win over Cascade set CHS up for a championship match against the host Cougars where once again the Athenians would win 2-0 (25-18, 25-19).

“It was just a great day all-around for us,” Cville coach Kelly Johnson said. “There was lot’s of good volleyball played all-around by everyone here and it was a good experience for our girls.”

In the four games for Crawfordsville senior Macy Bruton tallied 57 total kills, 32 digs and added eight aces. Fellow senior Jessica Tribble tallied 82 total assists and added six aces. Devan Jonson in her four games ended with 20 kills and Hallie Gayler ended with 17 kills.

On the defensive side for CHS Halle Elliot recorded 30 digs, Elyse Widmer had 17 digs, and Samantha Rohr ended with 16 digs of her own.

With their 4-0 record in the tournament, CHS moves to 6-0 on the season. The Athenians return to action on Tuesday when they will hit the road to take on Riverton Parke.

Mustangs compete at West Central Invite

Fountain Central competed in the West Central Invite on Saturday and dropped all three of their games to Morgan Township, North Judson, and Victory Christian Academy. FC’s defense was strong and was anchored by Rylee Simko who led the way with 36 total digs. Hannah Pricket also tallied 22 digs of her own.

FC returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to WRC foe Seeger.

Cross Country

Area teams compete at FC Grand Prix

Crawfordsville continued their strong start to the season on Saturday as the Athenians competed in the 25th annual Fountain Central Grand Prix.

On the boys side CHS made it two races and two first-place finishes with as the team scored 35 points. Crawfordsville had four of it’s runners’ place in the top 10 as Ryan Miller took home second (17:03), Max Brumett fifth (17:36), Hutton Haas seventh (17:52), and Roman Contreas 10th (18:09). Tyson Fuller earned an 11th place finish (18:14) for the Athenians.

The Crawfordsville girls also had another strong showing as they would place third led by sophomore Sophia Melevage’s second place finish (20:52). Caroline Novak raced to an 11th place finish with a time of 23:51 while Katherine Novak finished just behind her in 13th (23:55). Gabby Warren was 18th and Karla Fernandez rounded out the scoring for CHS with a 19th place finish.

North Montgomery earned fourth place finishes on both the boys and girls sides as the girls scored 118 points with the boys scoring 125.

Paul Lueking for the boys and Maggie Ireland for the girls were each the top finishers for the Chargers as Leuking placed 18th and Ireland finished 20th. Fountain Central had individual strong showings on both sides. Brailey Hoagland earned a fourth place finish for the FC girls with a time of 21:47.

Hayden Kler took home a 19th place (19:09) finish for the FC boys.

Mounties compete at Shelbyville Invite

Southmont also was in action on the course on Saturday as the Mounties competed in the Shelbyville Invite.

For the boys Mason Cass led the way with a time of 18:32 while Aaron Evans raced to a time of 19:21. Hunter Alesi also finished with a sub-20 time of 19:27.

On the girls side senior Faith Allen continued her strong start with an overall time of 20:32. Heaven Smith ended her race with a time of 24:27 and Darby Cottrell ended at 25:53.

Girls Soccer

Mounties drop first game of the season

In facing argaubly one of the tougher teams on the schedule, Southmont girls soccer dropped their first game of the season Saturday in a 7-2 loss to Monrovia.

The Mounties are now 2-1 and will look to go 2-0 in the Sagamore Athletic Conference when they welcome Lebanon on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

Mounties blanked by Bulldogs

Southmont boys soccer was looking to avoid the sweep of Monrovia as they took the field after the girls on Saturday. However the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Mounties as they fell 3-0.

South falls to 1-2 on the season and will open up SAC play on Tuesday when they travel to Danville.
