Weekend Sports Roundup: Local runners back in action

This past Saturday marked the official beginning for our area Cross Country teams and one local volleyball team. Let’s take a look at how everyone fared in their first action of the season.

Athenians begin season with strong showing

Crawfordsville cross country has depth and talent on it’s side coming into this season. Both of those things were on full display on Saturday as the Athenians traveled to compete in the Edgewood Invite. The boys began the year in the best way possible as the team took home first place. Ryan Miller paced the boys team and ended with a third place finish overall with a time of 17:40. Max Brumett earned a fifth place finish (17:58) with Hutton Haas taking seventh (18:05).

Over on the girls side the Athenians also had a strong showing as they would finish third overall as a team scoring 65 points. Sophomore Sophia Melevage led the way with a third place finish with a time of 20:53. Caroline Novak placed 13th overall for CHS with a 24:35 and Gabby Warren earned a 17th place finish with a time of 24:48. CHS will take the week off before competing at the Fountain Central Grand Prix next Saturday.

Allen begins season with 1st place finish

Southmont began their 2022 season by competing in the Clinton Prairie Invitational. Senior Faith Allen got her season started off in dominating fashion with a first place finish in the girls race with a time of 20:47. Heaven Smith placed 10th for the Mounties while Darby Cottrell earned a 15th place finish and Jaysa Crull 26th.

On the boys side the Mounties were led by Hunter Alesi who placed 19th overall. Skyler Woods finished right behind Alesi in 20th. Ryley Mitton earned a 23rd place finish with Aaron Evans taking 24th. Brett Keller placed 38th, Sam Crum 39th, and Clay Allen 43rd.

The Mounties will be back on the course on Thursday when the travel to participate in the Seeger Hokum Karem at 5 p.m.

Chargers open season at Valley Cross Kickoff

North Montgomery opened up their cross country season as they competed in the Valley Cross Kickoff at Terre Haute South.

Paul Lueking and Jack Rogers paced the Charger boys as Lueking ended with a time of 19:22 and Rogers a 19:43.

Payton Kunz led the girls team in the season opener.

The Chargers will join the Mounties on Thursday as the will also compete in the Seeger Hokum Karem.

Mustang VB opens season vs Tri-County

Fountain Central volleyball opened up their 2022 season on Saturday as the Mustangs hosted Tri-County.

The young Mustangs would be swept 3-0 in their season opener.

FC has a busy week ahead as they host South Newton on Monday, host Indiana School for the Deaf on Wednesday, are at Delphi on Thursday and will compete in the Western Invitational on Saturday.
