William “Bill” Robert Ellis Sr. passed away the morning of Wednesday, April 21, 2021, in Crawfordsville.

He was born Jan. 16, 1942, at Richmond, Indiana, to John and Louise Ellis.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Frank, George, Paul, Vern and Vaughn Ellis; and sisters, Una Ziegler, Lou Ann Lair and Janet Hathaway.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Ellis; sisters, Mary Ellis, Jane Johnson and Cecilia Spicer; four children, Bill (Janet) Ellis, Angela (Brad) Oliver, Shelley (Boyd) Jones and Jennifer Ellis; and six grandchildren, Stephanie Ellis, Matthew Ellis, Tyler (Claire) Oliver, Abigail Oliver, Emily Oliver and Garton Ellis.

Bill was a 1960 graduate of Richmond High School. He began his career in newspaper at The Graphic (formerly Westside Enterprise), followed by Palladium Item in Richmond. He moved to Crawfordsville in 1978 to work as a pressman at the Journal Review, and retired from Temple Inland in January 2008. Bill and Peggy were members of Woodland Heights Christian Church.

Bill loved ice cream, Old Western movies, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a huge fan of IU basketball. He never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. Bill never lost his sense of humor and was always making jokes. Per his wishes, his body was donated to the IU School of Medicine.

A celebration of life will be held 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25 at Stone Creek Lodge, 2865 S. State Road 47, Crawfordsville, IN, 47933. All are welcome to come and share stories about Bill.
