Woman, granddaughter located after getting lost at Pine Hills

An outing to Pine Hills Nature Preserve on Tuesday turned into an ordeal for a Montezuma woman and her granddaughter.

Audrey Keller was taking the girl to see Devil’s Backbone when they somehow got off the trail, Waveland Community Volunteer Fire Chief Nathan Poynter said.

“She got to a place where they didn’t know where she was at anymore,” Poynter said.

Keller managed to find cell phone service and called her husband, who notified the police just after 9 p.m. It was dark by the time search crews from Waveland, Alamo and New Market fire departments arrived.

“They just had to go by voice and hollering back and forth,” said Poynter, who managed the incident command.

It took more than an hour for crews to reach the pair. No injuries were reported.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene.

This is the third time search crews have been called to the trails. A dog was brought to safety in May after falling over a railing and an injured person was later rescued.
