Greased Lightnin’

1950s rollicking musical coming to MDT

Posted

HILLSBORO — Myers Dinner Theatre is excited to continue its 2023 Main Stage season with the beloved rock ‘n’ roll love story of Grease.

This show, full of great music and high-energy dancing, will open Friday with seating for dinner at 6 p.m. and the meal at 6:30 p.m. This play, directed by Brett Mutter, will run through July 29.

It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hubcaps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby sox and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be rebellious, provocative and rebellious.

At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still make demure Sandy his girl?

The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Greased Lightnin’,” “We Go Together” and “Mooning,” recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Starting off with an eight-year Broadway run, Grease is among the world’s most popular musicals and has a cult-like following, especially among teens.

This popular musical will feature some newcomers to the MDT stage, along with some returning actors. New to Myers Dinner Theatre will be Cooper Fitch (as Danny Zuko), Anya Burke (Sandy Dumbrowski), Love Ruddell (Betty Rizzo), Matthew Porter (Kenickie), Jamie Rediger (Jan), Trent Mosty (Doody), Henry Allan (Sonny Latierri), Will Karls (Eugene Florczyk) D’Juliana Calzada (Cha-Cha), Matthew Adam Hawkins (Vince Fontaine) and Brett Frederickson (Johnny Casino). The MDT alumni in this show are Drae Beller (Frenchy), TJ Bird (Roger), Misty McGrady (Miss Lynch) and Hannah Bergman (Patty Simcox).

Grease opens Friday and runs through July 29 with weekday matinee seating for meals at 11:30 a.m. and curtain at 1:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening performances will have seating for meals at 6 p.m. with curtain at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees will have seating for meals at noon and curtain at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by phone at
