4-10 Roundup: Athenian track and Charger golf battle elements, both come away with wins

Athenians sweep Knights in season opener

Crawfordsville track and field was finally able to get their 2024 season underway on Wednesday as CHS hosted Lafayette Central Catholic. Not only did CHS have to battle the Knights but battle through some rainy conditions. That didn’t stop CHS from coming away with a sweep as the boys were 84-46 winners and the girls dominated with a 119-7 win.

For the Athenian boys winners were; Tyson Fuller in the 200 and 400 meter dash and Fuller also took second in the 100 meter dash, Max Brumett won the 800 meter dash, Josh Inskeep, Brumett, and Jantzen Thayer went 1-2-3 in the 1600 meter run and Hutton Haas won the 3200 meter run. Alec Saidian won both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles while CHS won the 4x800 relay. Dylan Wolcott won the high jump, Jackson Miles the pole vault, and Wyatt Million the discus.

The CHS girls got great performances from Na’arah Byard who took home victoried in the 100 meter dash and long jump with teammates Lily Hummel and Bea Swick finishing second and third. Ruth Garcia and Maesa Horton went 1-2 in the 200 meter dash, Caroline Melevage and Olivia Jett went 1-2 in the 400 meter dash with Cville taking all four spots in the 800 meter run  as Katherine Novak, Melanie Dowd, Caroline Novak, and Li Li Yeung went 1-2-3-4 respectively. Katherine and Caroline went 1-2 in the 1600 meter run, Sophia Melevage and Gabby Warren 1-2 in the 3200 meter run, Aubrey Lowe, Guinevere Scmizter-Torbert, Melany Monterrosa, and MaryJane Halupka went 1-2-3-4 in the 110 hurdles, with Schmitzer-Torbert taking home the crown in the 300 hurdles. Cville swept the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 meter relays. Defending sectional champion Riley Gardner won the high jump, Ally Johnson pole vault, Ellie Walker shot put, and Alyana Schroeter discus.

The Athenians will now get ready to compete in the Charger relays on Friday.

Charger best Mustangs in season opener

Golfing in the rain isn’t an easy task, but that’s what North Montgomery and Fountain Central dealt with on Tuesday as the Chargers welcomed the Mustangs to Rocky Ridge in the season opener for North.. It was match play style in the season opener with the Chargers coming way with a 4-1 win. Neal Jeffery shot a 37 to earn medalist for the Chargers. Alex Chapman carded a 39, Rohen Barnes ended his night wiht a 46 and Beckett Martin shot a 48. FC was led by Wes Jackson’s 40 while Jaylin Payne carded a 43. Kam Krug and Ayden Donaldson both shot 52’s while William Armstrong ended with a 55.

The Mustangs will be back at Rivercrest in Covington on Saturday for the Covington Earlybird Scramble. North Montgonery will compete in their first 18-hole meet of the season on Saturday when they travel to compete in the Danville Invite.
