4-18 Roundup: Mustangs baseball notches upset over 8th ranked Patriots, Hall cranks sixth home run

Hall crushes state-leading 6th homer vs Hot Dogs

Southmont senior Mason Hall is obliterating baseball’s in 2023. In a 12-2 loss to the Hot Dogs on Tuesday, Hall crushed his state-leading sixth home run of the season. It was a two-run blast in the top of the fourth. Hall on the season has 15 runs batted in to go with his six home runs and is up to hitting .429 on the year.

In the Mountie loss Carter Hubble had a 2-2 night at the plate.

South falls 4-5 (0-3 SAC) on the season and will host the Hot Dogs on Wednesday.

Mustangs pull off upset of 7th ranked Patriots

Seeger came in ranked as the No. 8 ranked team in Class 2A in Tuesday’s WRC showdown with Fountain Central. The Mustangs who just came off a sweep of North Vermillion on Saturday were able to make it three straight WRC wins as they pulled off the upset of the Patriots when Nolan Acton walked it off for FC to secure an 8-7 win.

Entering the seventh, Seeger (7-4, 3-2 WRC) was up 7-4 but the Mustangs (3-7, 3-4 WRC) didn’t back down and slowly but surely chipped away.

The two WRC foes will travel back to Seeger on Wednesday with FC looking for the sweep.

Softball

Bruins blast past Athenians

Tri-West softball flexed its muscle once again on Tuesday as the Bruins made quick work of Crawfordsville in a Sagamore Conference showdown with the Bruins coming away with an 18-1 win in five innings. The Bruins scored 10 runs in the opening inning to take control right away.

Crawfordsville (0-9, 0-3 SAC) got their lone run in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Bailey Crane. Olivia Hedrick added a double with Brooklyn Mills collecting a hit.

The two SAC foes will travel to Lizton on Wednesday as the Bruins go for the sweep.

Warriors best Chargers

Danville came away with a 16-2 win in five innings over North Montgomery on Tuesday. The Chargers collected four hits and were able to get their two runs in the fourth inning.

Piper Ramey went 2-2 on the night for the Chargers. Emma Pyle and Ella McManomy each also had a hit.

The Chargers fall to 1-6 (0-3 SAC) on the season and will host the Warriors in Linden on Wednesday.

Mustang miscues lead to Patriot win

Fountain Central has had some success early on in 2023 but Tuesday they fell to WRC foe Seeger 14-1 in five innings. The Patriots scored early and often and held a 9-0 lead after two innings. Fountain Central committed six errors in the loss while Seeger collected 17 total hits.

FC (4-6, 2-5 WRC) had five hits in the loss, two of which came from junior Zoe Foxworthy-Dejournett. Kacey Kirkpatrick, Kearney Foxworthy-Dejournett and Kyra Kiger all had one hit for the Mustangs.

The two teams will travel back to Seeger on Wednesday with the Mustangs looking to avoid the sweep.

Track and Field

Chargers see tough competition

North Montgomery track and field traveled to take on an always tough Harrison team along with Northwestern in a three-team meet on Tuesday. Harrison won both sides with the Charger girls taking third and the boys second.

Highlights of the meet for the Chargers were a third place finish in the long jump from Gabe Shirar, second place in the pole vault from Ben Eldridge, and third place in the high jump from Kelby Harwood. Owen Utterback placed third in the 110 hurdles and took second in the 200 meter dash.

The 4x100 relay team of Lucas Lighty, Erick Bautista, Connor Koopman, and Harwood placed second and the 4x800 team of Ryan Hopper, Paul Leuking, Kale Mitchell, and Nolan Yarger placed second also.

The Chargers will host a pair of Sagamore Conference foes on Thursday when they welcome Lebanon and Danville.

Boys Golf

Mounties down Stars and Cougars on links

Southmont boys golf was back at home on Tuesday when the Mounties welcomed Western Boone and North Putnam. South ended the three-team meet with a pair of wins as they shot a 173. Western Boone shot a 179 with the Cougars carding a 223.

Nolan Allen earned medalist for the Mounties with a 40. Austin Foley shot a 41, Harrison Haddock a 44 and Luke Tesmer ended his night with a 48.

The Mounties will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to take  on Greencastle.
