Artists from Abilities Services Inc. are adding more color to the heart of Crawfordsville.
The consumers created paintings to wrap around trees and posts in the downtown, changing the scenery for people getting their steps in during this time of social distancing.
“We know it is just a small effort but if would bring joy to just one person — then we would consider it a successful venture,” Michelle Leonard-Smith, ASI CEO and executive director, said.
In March, the agency partnered with Crawfordsville Main Street and the city’s Parks and Recreation Depatment to decorate the spaces for Disability Awareness Month.
About a dozen paintings were installed at Marie Canine Plaza and Pike Place, near the post office and outside Maxine’s on Green and China Inn. As the paintings appeared, people began reaching out asking for their own wraps.

The virus forced ASI to cancel a kickoff reception at Tri-County Bank & Trust and a Fusion 54 display leading up to April’s Autism Awareness Month.
Consumers had also been invited to display and sell items at a statewide art show. The agency is looking at other options for selling artwork while the offices remain closed to the public.
“This is important for our artists, too, because they really worked hard leading up to March,” Leonard-Smith said.
